Elemental Personalities. It intrigues me that people's personalities do tend to reflect an element of nature. While our bodies contain a combination of all these elements, it is fascinating that a predominant element influences our personalities. This was first written about from a Greek Philosopher in the Fifth Century and continues to be something studied today. I interviewed people from each element and am posting their answers on this website. I first introduced you to a Water person and shared some of the history of elemental personalities in that article. Now I invite you to discover how a Fire person thinks, reacts, and observes the world. For this particular interview I talked to two Fire people. One is all white hot like lightning, and the other is a constant simmering temperature of heat. As such, fire interweaves and influences different results for these people. I wanted to share both of these personalities with you because we must not forget that not everyone is a stereotypical element, there are subtle variations for each. As before, I asked about thirty questions and they could answer or decline from answering any question. I also invited them to offer any other comment they wished at the end of the interview. Please notice how each responds to the questions, how they talk, as much as what they say. Q: 1. What element do you most closely associate? A1: Fire A2: I closely associate to the Fire element – I have always have had a better relation with this element than with the others and in my line of work I work a lot with electronics including audio and video which has its own fire. I do know that I am not seen as a fire element because of my quiet and gentle disposition, but when it comes down to it I am like a slow burning coal that looks innocent but underneath I have a hot center and some tender can start a small flame or a large one. Q: 2. How did you discover what element you are? A1: I think I have always known what I am, but I don’t remember spending much time thinking about it. A2: I have done multiple tests and many have pointed me at other elements, but when it came down to the final descriptions of each element I found that my personality and actions were most accurately described by fire. Q: 3. How does your element help you with others? Your job? Life in general? A1: I am not sure. But I think my behavior patterns keeps me focused. A2: The fire energy gives me the strength to be assertive when I need to be which is good since I work with and around my clients a lot. It gives me confidence when I am doing trainings which helps me to convey confidence in the systems I have installed and they will be using. It helps me to be social when the need arises even though I enjoy quiet more. It also gives me the desire to be honest and not put the normal BS in life that does not need to be there. I have been told I am too honest, I give too much information (especially at work and dealing with clients), but I feel a client with all the information can understand what is truly going on. Maybe too much information is not the best policy, but it is how I work and how I feel life should be. Q: 4. What do you feel personally are the pros and cons of your element? And do you find it has more of a positive or negative influence? A1: For the most part I like who/what I am, so over all is positive, but sometimes I frighten those I wish to help. A2: Pros of being a fire element are that fire gives you strength and confidence in yourself. It gives you an aggression when you need to apply it. It allows me to work with and around other strong personalities without being smothered. Cons are a lot of the same, very strong, overly confident, too aggressive, and can be volatile if not kept in check or if held back for too long. Because I tend to be more of the slow burning coal I am also very underestimated and strong people think that I am easily pushed around when in reality I may be just enjoying the flow of things, however when they push too far, I can burst into flames and they are shocked and sometimes offended because they underestimated me. I feel that a fire element who can harness and work WITH the element can be a very self confident and energetic at causes that really move them – like for me it is my job, I love what I do and that strength helps me get through some of the frustrations or long days that my job puts me through. I also believe that a fire element who does not understand themselves can be very dangerous and can be a ticking time bomb to themselves and others. I say that from experience as well – been there, done that. Q: 5. How does your element influence how you view others? A1: I feel that I view people as what they really are. Not necessarily as what they project. A2: It allows me to look at people and assess them pretty well. I find I can sense when a person will be of a personal disposition (kind, honest, deceptive, aggressive, etc) which then allows me to adjust my reactions to them. It really makes me want to look at people I come into contact with in a very honest and comforting way. However, it also helps me to avoid some of the garbage some people put out because of their own issues. My use of the gentle side also allows me to approach people without their defenses going up and makes me more approachable as well. Q: 6. Briefly explain what it is like to be your element. A1: Normal. I don’t know how it feels to not be what I am. A2: I have seen different fire elements use the element in different ways depending on their personality. I find that being this element has challenges of control but on the flip side adds passion to my life that cannot help but be expressed. Q: 7. How does it feel mentally/emotionally, when you can be connected to your element? A1: I am never disconnected. So I don’t know what it is like otherwise. A2: Strong – that is the easiest way to describe it. I have to be willing to step into that strength, which most of the time I can do because I am confident in most areas of my life – but even in the areas I am not, even when I am the most resistant to change, the fire in me give me strength to be honest and push through my issues. Q: 8. What resources do you use to connect with your element? A1: See #7 [I am never disconnected. So I don't know what it is like otherwise.] A2: I find I pull on all of the elements to connect with my element – put me in a forest on a sunny day next to a stream and a campfire and time to commune with God and I get more energized than I can put into words. So I try to do as many connections to all the other elements as I can to stay recharged and to think clearly. Q: 9. What happens when you are not able to receive an adequate supply of your element? (Emotionally, mentally, behaviorally, etc.) A1: See #7 [I am never disconnected. So I don't know what it is like otherwise.] A2: Ohhhhh – not good. I get very self destructive which then ends up turning on those around me and even effects my job as well. Usually my wife will sense it before I do and even then it takes me a while before I will react to it and correct the situation. That is when I know that it is time for a real time away to get grounded in all the elements at once. Not a pretty site when this happens. Q: 10. What element do you find to be the most uncomfortable? A1: I am not uncomfortable with any element. There is no Fire without Air. With Fire, Air becomes a warm summer breeze. Earth is a bit stubborn and a little boring sometimes, but provides consistency and stability. Fire cleanses the Earth. Water can cool an inferno to comforting warmth and prevent self destruction. Fire turns ice to water. Fire can excite an ember to a blaze or create an impassable firebreak. Though these things are obvious, I believe the metaphor is clear. A2: I find that it is any person that doesn’t respect their element or abuse their strength from their element. Abusers are my most uncomfortable because a lot of times they know what they are doing, even if they don’t have the proper description for it. Q: 11. When you engage others of your opposite element how do you tend to react? What do you do to remain in their presence? A1: Treat them with respect. I simply select a suitable degree of passive or aggressiveness as the situation dictates A2: I love being around all the elements – my opposite is no exception – however the opposite can be either very exciting or very challenging and it usually depends on how adept they are with their element. Someone that is grounded in their element is very enjoyable to be around. Q: 12. What is it like to engage others of your same personality element? A1: It’s a Brotherhood, we can't tell you…… Just kidding, but that is what it feels like. A2: If it is someone who is comfortable in their element, but doesn’t abuse it, it can be a lot of fun to play off each other strengths and enjoy time together. Q: 13. What do you do to indulge in your element? What extracurricular activities, places, object do you engage in that support your element? A1: I do not know what it is like, to not be me. It’s not a thing, a place, or an activity. It is what I am. Sometimes a candle flame sometimes a Phoenix. Everything I do feeds and controls Fire. A2: I guess my biggest indulgence is my job since that tends to support my element a lot. I get lost in what I do and love what I do most of the time (when BS or politics are not involved) My favorite activity is two things – cooking and being in the woods (like in a cabin in the mountains) – some of my favorite memories are of my wife and I in cabins in the mountains and of my occasional fishing trips when I was younger. Q: 14. What advice would you give others of your element? A1: The behavior of Fire can be dangerous. ALWAYS, exercise caution. NEVER lose control. A2: I would advise that they get to know what kind of fire you are, i.e. hot, smoldering, flashy, etc, and learn to harness that to strengthen you, but also find was of expressing that fire creatively so that you don’t build up too much pressure and end up exploding at a really bad time at others or even yourself. You can burn yourself just as easily as you can others. Q: 15. What is the one thing you would want others to understand about what it is like to be your element and how we can support you? A1: See #13 [I do not know what it is like, to not be me...It is what I am...] and please be patient, for that is the weak link, in the chain of fire. A2: Just because fire can be a very strong and powerful element, don’t lose site that even fire needs support – earth to help contain, water to help cool, air to bring life. I am one that is the slow burner so I utilize all the other elements to help myself and ask that when I ask for help, please help, I will not ask for help when I really don’t need it. Q: 16. What technique(s) do you use to channel your element? A1: I am very comfortable with anger (even if I'm not angry). Still working on other techniques. A2: I have learned more through healing techniques like Life Force Healing, Reiki, and Elements of Alchemy, and they have helped me channel my fire...These techniques have given me support and also taught me new ways of channeling besides working harder or consumed by my own human inaccuracy of thinking. Q: 17. Do you have other terms for this elemental association? What are they? A1: Energy. A2: Not really – I am one for the basics, so fire is what it is. Q: 18. What is your favorite thing about being your element? Your most challenging? A1: The strength and endurance it gives. Patience, or the lack there of is very challenging. A2: My favorite thing is when it channels through me for my work and I accomplish more than even I expect and then my clients end up being blown away by the purpose and intention that I put into it and encourage those around me to put in. Most challenging, when I dwell on my “faults” and end up using my flames to lash out at those around me for no cause or by just burning myself with guilt, blame, or obsessing on inaccuracies. My wife ends up taking the brunt of it sometimes but also is able to help snap me out it with a reality check, this sometimes also includes talking me down first so I break my obsession so I can actually listen – Thank you honey!! Q: 19. What habits do you associate with your element? e.g., how do you compensate, what ticks do you have, routines, thought patterns, etc. A1: I always have the potential to be volatile, so quick reactions are a fair description. I try to always be aware of my surroundings and possible situations. That helps keep those reactions positive. A2: I think that fire can encourage good and bad habits because of its strength. I see good habits like strength, protection, assertiveness, and loyalty. These good habits can be used as bad habits too if taken to more of an extreme. To balance the bad side of these habits is just to keep balance myself. Q: 20. From the following choices which statement most resembles the way you approach life (or is there another phrase and what would that be): I am; I feel; I do; I love; I speak; I see; I understand; other? A1: I do. (Without a doubt) A2: I watch – I love being an observer – whether it be people, places, or life. In some ways that is why I love to travel, I love watching what happens. Even when I have seen some very bad things happen, watching how people respond to those times is what I love watching. Q: 21. Do others call you by any nicknames that just happen to be in association with your element? What are they? A1: Not that I know of. [My emphasis: He couldn't think of anything at the time, but I know personally that his significant someone calls him her heat generator.] A2: Dragonheart – because of my love for dragons and how their energy always seems to speak to me. Q: 22. When you find you are emotionally out of control with your element what do you do to reign it in and find your balance again? Mentally out of control? What outlets do you find help you the best? A1: I am always in control and stand accountable for my actions. By definition - To not be in control means that someone else is responsible. It is not an excuse for bad behavior. Burning off excess energy is a necessity and should be done responsibly. A2: Emotionally out of control – that is hard for me to reign in, always have had that issue – I was always a bit more sensitive emotionally and so I can end up turning all the way upside down when I get out of balance. It sometimes really takes a good shakeup or sometimes I just have to find something like a movie or music that can help me work through it and get my balance back. Mentally out of control – This is not usually my issue – my emotions are usually my direction of imbalance. My best outlets are movies and music – I like a lot of different kinds of each. Sometimes I just need to get away from day to day and get fully reset – if that is the case than the mountains are where I can do that best. Q: 23. How has being your element affect your relationships with others? With your significant someone? A1: See #6 [Normal. I don’t know how it feels to not be what I am.] However, I am sure it is challenging to live with me, and I am positive my partner makes concessions. A2: I think my fire creates a loyalty toward people – sometime even when I shouldn’t. The strength has helped me create friends that I think will last for a lifetime even when we may not talk but every once in a while. I admit I have become a Facebook junkie because of this. I enjoy the friendships and the ability to communicate from time to time. I also helps me see who maybe I shouldn’t connect with as often because Facebook also shows how people really are and think. My fire energy has been a real asset when connecting with my wife – I think it adds a wider dimension to our relationship since she is air and helps each of us in different ways at different times. Having her as a balance and visa versa, I think has helped us make it through some of the rough times and strengthened us in the good times. Q: 24. Within your element do you find you tend to gravitate to a certain type of that element? e.g., water people - fresh vs. salty water, oceans vs. lakes, showers vs. baths, misters vs. rainstorms or soak it all in. A1: By far, the warmth of the desert sun. My perfect vacation involves the wind in my face (@ roughly 70 mph) riding my favorite dirt bike on the Baja peninsula. In the middle of summer. A2: I think I gravitate toward bolder fire people because I like their company and yet it takes attention off of me and lets me sit and smolder but be a part of the bigger picture. Q: 25. If you remember your dreams how does your element appear visually, symbolically, emotionally? Describe. A1: I do remember my dreams. I don’t think anything is other than it appears. Except energy. I view it in specific colors, size, shape, movement and sound, each is also unique. I can always choose to manipulate my actions and interactions in some way. A2: It is interesting – I know I dream but I very rarely remember them. The ones I do are usually over the top and involve money. Still have not figured this one out. Q: 26. How does your element enhance your senses and your body? Do you find some things to be more acute, while other things you are more immune? Explain. A1: I am not sure how it relates to anything but when I feel energized; I have repeatedly exhibited immunity to certain venoms and poisons and demonstrate improved reflexes, heightened senses and stamina. A2: What I find interesting is there has been a bit more fire physically in me from birth. I was born with a bit of a faster heartbeat and a half a degree higher body temperature – this has been true my whole life and even my wife will call me a bit of a heat generator. I adapt to temperature a bit better than most and have a pretty good immune system – I am rarely sick. Q: 27. Out of these four words which best describes your orientation: science, philosophy, spiritual science, tradition A1: Science A2: Science Q: 28. Choose which word best describes you from the following: Stable, Playful, Creative, Energetic A1: Creative A2: Stable Q: 29. Choose which word best describes you from this following list: Intuitive, Spontaneous, Strong, Compassionate A1: Strong A2: Compassionate Q: And which word are you most drawn to in this set: Knowledge, Success, Excitement, Practicality A1: Knowledge, Although Practicality is a close second but only out of necessity. A2: Practicality Q: 31. If there is anything else you would like to include or would like to ask others of your element or of other elements, please feel free to do so here. A1: What a person does is what counts. How they do it is what matters. A2: The biggest thing I would say is to learn to be true to yourself and your element. As you become more in tune with your element you will learn how to approach life in a more enthusiastic and peaceful way.
